Misang Pilipino (1965), by Lucrecia Roces Kasilag (1918-2008) .
This piece of music comes from the Philippines by contemporary composer Lucrecia Roces Kasilag, a pianist, composer, educator, and ethnomusicologist. Dra. Kasilag worked tirelessly in reconnecting Filipinos with their indigenous musical traditions, journeying to remote locations in her native Philippines to collect evidence, record songs, and reconnect with indigenous people and their traditions. The results of her work are still evident today; Filipino music schools have both western and indigenous music courses in their curricula.
Dra. Kasilag is largely unknown in the United States, and because of the lack of publishing resources in the Philippines, much of her work remains unpublished. Dr. Ellis’ work regarding Misang Pilipino (1965) resulted in her finding not one, but three different arrangements of this mass for the various institutions where Dra. Kasilag was connected.
